A full stack engineer is a position in high demand these days. This role requires general knowledge of all the different layers of software development. At a minimum, he/she must have functional knowledge of both the frontend and backend of software development, which they can then turn into a finished project. In some cases, depending on the company and its requirements,a full stack engineer is expected to have extensive knowledge and technical expertise in these different areas. For example, some of the expectations of a full stack engineer include a clear understanding of frontend scripting languages like HTML, CSS and JavaScript. However, he/she may also need to know how to code in PHP, SQL or Ruby on Rails. Also, a full stack engineer may need to be familiar with various database technologies such as MySQL, Oracle, MongoDB and PostgreSQL. Some full stack engineers also need to have knowledge of web server technologies such as Apache, Nginx, ISS and J2EE.
Some of the specific tasks that are often a part of the full stack engineer job include designing the overall architecture of a web application, maintaining its code integrity and organization, implementing security and data protection and developing web applications for both desktop and mobile use. Additionally, a full stack engineer should be comfortable collaborating with other company staff. He/she may regularly work with other members of the engineering team to design and launch new features. He/she may also coordinate with graphic design artists to convert their designs into visual elements on the website.
